Climate
Monthly indices computed from daily ERA5 reanalysis data, compared with 1991–2020 normals.

1 Temperature
From day to year: how current temperature compares with normal, and how it has changed since 1991.
Daily temperature versus the usual range
Latest day available: 31 October 2026. Unweighted mean of regional points. The shaded band holds 80% of days for the same period in 1991–2020 (10th to 90th percentile, ±7-day window). Source: Open-Meteo (ERA5), Observatory calculations.
Heat calendar: every day in colour
Each square is one day. Colour shows the gap between that day’s national mean temperature and the 1991–2020 normal for the same day: blue colder, red warmer than usual. Hover or tap a square to read the value. Source: Open-Meteo (ERA5), Observatory calculations.
Temperature anomaly (ref. 1991–2020)Difference between the observed mean temperature and the 1991–2020 average for the same month. A positive value means a warmer-than-normal month.
Very hot days in the monthA day when the maximum temperature exceeds the 90th percentile for the same month in 1991–2020, i.e. among the 10% usually hottest days of that month.
Very hot day: maximum temperature above the 90th percentile for the same month in 1991–2020.
2 Rainfall and drought
Rainfall in the current farming season, and the drought index combining rainfall and evaporation.
Farming season rainfall
32 mm since 1 September, 70 % of the normal for the same date (46 mm). Ranks 14 among the driest season starts since 1991 (36 seasons). Full-season normal: 292 mm. Latest day available: 31 October 2026.
The farming season starts on 1 September. The thick orange line adds up rainfall since the start of the current season; the grey band holds 80% of 1991–2020 seasons at the same date. The further the line falls below the band, the larger the rainfall deficit. Values at regional capitals (ERA5 reanalysis), not station measurements.
SPEI drought index (national average)Standardised drought index: compares the balance between rainfall and evapotranspiration with what is normal for the same period. Below −1 moderate, below −1.5 severe, below −2 extreme drought. The number 3 or 12 is the number of months accumulated.
Negative values indicate a water deficit. Thresholds: −1 moderate, −1.5 severe, −2 extreme. In summer, rainfall is close to zero, so SPEI-1 and SPEI-3 are less informative.
